The United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) is the specialized agency of the United Nations that promotes industrial development for poverty reduction, inclusive globalization and environmental sustainability. Its mandate is to promote and accelerate inclusive and sustainable industrial development in developing countries and economies in transition.

UNIDO's vision is a world where economic development is inclusive and sustainable and economic progress is equitable. The Organization focuses on three main thematic areas:

The Organization is recognized as a specialized and efficient provider of key services meeting the interlinked challenges of reducing poverty through productive activities, integrating developing countries in global trade through trade capacity-building, fostering environmental sustainability in industry, and improving access to clean energy. In carrying out the core requirements of its mandate and mission, UNIDO has more than doubled its technical cooperation delivery over the past ten years. At the same time, it has also substantially increased its mobilization of financial resources, testifying to the growing international recognition of the Organization as an effective provider of inclusive and sustainable industrial development services.

What is the role of UNIDO in the project?

UNIDO is the implementing agency of the project. The Organization is responsible for formulating the project and for suggesting/implementing all technical solutions brought forward. UNIDO will provide a project team that consists of programme managers, national project coordinators, cluster development agents and project support staff based in each country as well as of international and national consultants. UNIDO will deliver both management and technical/training services; the Organization will mobilize other international and national experts according to the specific needs of the beneficiaries that will be further specified in the inception and implementation phases. Some specific services such as the organization of business missions, the design and implementation of promotional tools, may be subcontracted to external service providers.
